Hi folks,

I would like to get some advice on what configuration to go for my laptop. I do not use my laptop for gaming, only to connect to a HDTV through HDMI and watch movies (including HD, blu-ray quality) and online HD video streaming. Hence, I am researching what configuration to go for. I have listed my areas of confusion and hope I can get enough information to make a decision, thanks.

- AMD or Intel?
- i5 or i3 ?
- 4gb or more RAM?
- Dedicated Graphics card or not?
- Windows 7 or Windows 8?
- Sony vs Lenovo vs Samsun vs Dell?

Cheers

If it's going to spend all it's time on a TV, there's little reason for a laptop. A SFF (small form factor) desktop will be quieter, faster, and cheaper.

Thanks for the quick response. I should have specified "mostly" to connect to the TV:) . I did contemplate a SFF desktop considering its way cheaper, only that I do need to be able to lug the machine around occasionally when I travel and need a laptop for basic computing tasks. I would not use my laptop for gaming or any high end processing.

try this out http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Computing-BOXDC53427HYE-Des... though u will need to add RAM and stoage but will still work out cheaper (and much smaller) than a similar laptop

Thanks Jinay, I did in fact look at this a while ago. But it doesnt serve my needs as I do need a laptop that can be lugged around occasionally.

Good luck finding a current gen Laptop that comes with Windows 7, so 8 then, Sony is overpriced, Dell...well you know, Samsung maybe, but in your list i'd say Lenovo. Something like this would destroy any HD stuff you wanted to do, be good for any gaming you pick up later, and be amazing for any kind of general computing... and is head scratchingly well priced right now:

If you really don't care past just being able to push HD quality video, this is much more affordable and will do it just as well without all the bells and whistles:

Thanks Jaxem. I have also been leaning towards Lenovo after doing much research over the last few days. Samsung is cheaper i.e. get marginally higher specs at the same price as a Lenovo but am not very sure about their after sales service and the like. Lenovo scores hands down in that department i.e.sturdy and usually gives less issues than the other brands. I found this amazing deal for a Sony i7, 500 gb HDD,Win7 Prof @695 USD (http://www.snapdeal.com/product/sony-vaio-sve14117gnb-l...) as compared to a basic i7 lenovo which is 980 USD (http://www.snapdeal.com/product/lenovo-ideapad-u410-593...;6). I am ok with not having Win8 so am I doing it right by comparing the Sony vs Lenovo? Like you rightly said I would not ideally go for a Sony because of the price but this sounds like a good deal, yes?

The other one I have my eyes on is - http://www.snapdeal.com/product/lenovo-z500-ideapad-593...;1 > 695 usd.

Cheers

Sonys are great laptops for sure, they just usually cost way more than they should. That seems like a great deal considering how similar the other two are at their price points. Getting Windows 7 Pro is a nice bonus, i'm not a big fan of Windows 8 and probably never will be. I'd pull the trigger on that Sony, it's a good mid range PC.
