And don't forget to look at the case: if the case doesn't support micro-atx, then the MSI one is out of question as it won't fit. Same applies to the ATX one, if the case doesn't support ATX, it won't fit.

Yes it is compatible, although I do not personally recommend Haswell if you are considering any overclock on the CPU, as they heat up too much. In that situation, 3rd generation is better.

Of course, if you do change to 3rd generation then the motherboard won't fit. You'll need a motherboard that has a 1155 socket for the 3rd generation intel CPUs.

It's a pretty bad thing in my opinion, especially since Haswell were supposed to be great for Laptops as they used much less power. How's that going to help if the cooling problem laptops already have gets even worse...

Yeah. Wasn't there kind of the same problem with Ivy bridge when it first came out?

z87 motherboards are the "premium", but most of those premium features are related to overclocking, which you can't do if your processor isn't unlocked (doesn't have the K at the end of the name, for example 4570K).

Asrock is about a $100 and the MSI one is about $90 on amazon so if the price matters to you, get the MSI one, but all in all they are basically the same only the MSI one is MATX, but has two PCIe slots instead of one on the asrock one which has one and two legacy PCI ones.
