Spare Computer Usefullness

Hey Community,

I've dug up some old parts from a computer I was using to limp along while I had my main system's parts RMA'd, and now I really don't know what to do with this one. It's normally just my office work/ web browsing PC but I think I could do more with it.

It's a i3 2100 with a MSI H61M-E33/W8 with 4 GB of DDR3 1600 (cheap Kingston stuff, the kind Fry's sells for $25 a pair) but it seems the H61 can only run it at 1333 with a Sandy Bridge CPU. Go figure.

It also has a 1 TB Toshiba 7200 RPM Sata III drive (wasted, I know. The H61 can only support Sata II.) I had a spare PSU laying around, so I put it in (Corsair HX1000W if you wanted to know). I was running it with a Zotac GT 610 2GB "Synergy" edition video card, since the drivers for the integrated HD2000 are a complete damn nightmare (driver crashing on a fresh install of Windows 7 AND 8) and considering I got the Zotac brand new for $15, I wasn't worried about it.

It's all crammed into a Antec 300 case, and a generic DVD burner. I was going to make it my dedicated Ubuntu machine, but I've had mixed luck in the past with Ubuntu 12.04 and I don't want to run any non-LTS releases. Also, for whatever reason Windows XP is slow as hell on this machine.

I would sell it, but honestly it's probably only worth about $300 at most, and I'm not quite that hard up for cash.

Any suggestions as to what I could do with this machine? I'm not looking to spend money on it, as I have a nice main rig. I was thinking about making this a Folding@Home or SETI machine, but the graphics card is just too weak.

That's actually a good idea, but I have a PS3 for playing Blue Ray (or is it Blueray or Bluray? I've seen it all sorts of ways.) I would love to set it up as a HTPC but I think my wife my object to a mini-tower sitting next to the TV. Getting a cable tv tuner card would be fun though. Home DVR FTW. Could I do this on a version of Linux (I miss the home media center that Vista had, I don't see it on Windows 7) or would I be stuck working with Windows still (not that that is a problem, I just prefer Open Source wherever possible. Also, I forgot to mention I have a Antec Basiq 500W PSU I could swap out, just it has a very noisy 80MM fan, whereas the HX1000W has a 140MM fan and is silent.)

Thanks for the idea though!

Edit: OK, It's early and my brain isn't working, Windows Media Center is right where it should be in Windows 7 Pro, so I could use that I suppose.
