Should I upgrade to i5 4670k from my i5 2500k running at 4.6?

If you think I should could you list some benefits to upgrading then?

Much thanks!

Solution

At 4.6 there is no point, your just wasting money. the 2500k at that speed will eat anything you throw at it.
For a negligible, and unnoticeable speed increase (IPC with haswell over SB/IV) it's really not worth it.

My mobo is not the greatest for oc'ing and I have a 2500k on it begging to be oc'd but.... I recently acquired a nice z87 mobo by gigabyte as part of a deal and I can get the 4670k for 209 plus tax. Should I upgrade in that instance?? I mean I know the chip brings no major improvement to the table but over all I think the mobo and cpu upgrade will bring me up to par with advancements coming up not to mention a little improvement here and there from my 2nd gen chip. My question is should I hold off on the chip, sell or trade the mobo for a quality z77 and oc the crap out of the 2500k?? what would yall do?

nicely put conundrum :) On that basis, seeing as you have the Z87, I would try sell the 2500k, and offset it against the purchase of the 4670k. Although, as pointed out the increase in performance isn't that great, average between SB and IB was 5-10 % and another 5-10% with Haswel, so it is still an increase :) Seeing as you have the mobo, getting the CPU to give you the latest tech, with practically zero cost, would be my preferred option. But others may think differently.

Well,

It has been done. And you know.... what a difference indeed. I do not regret the upgrade. I guess coming from an "unClocked: 2nd gen i5 it will show. Nonetheless, I cant say it was pain free. With the new motherboard change I had to reinstall windows and I can't seem to access the most part of my installed programs on the old C: drive. I believe the universal identifying code embedded in old hardware and OS conflicts with the new MOBO or something to that effect. I know I initially opted to sell my old system but perhaps I should keep it for tinkering purposes. I basically have a whole PC setup minus the case and GPU; both easy and cheap to come by. I figure I'd give this "OC game" a row and apply what I learn to this here new setup eventually.

One thing I do want to point out from a gamers perspective: applying this upgrade has enhanced my COD Ghosts gameplay a great deal. I have a 780 and at highest settings it would lag pretty bad so I ended up using optimal settings for a smoother game minus the great detail. Now....I can apply the highest setting without a single fault. Everything is just faster with crisp visuals. Not sure If one thing contributes to this or all the changes as a whole have made this possible. Thanks for the feedback Keith12.
