Which build should I go with?

haha... yeah... it's always a landmine when you suggest another case to someone. Sorta was flinching when i did it. Just wanted to maximize what you got for your money. Seemed like a huge waste to have such a highly capable machine and then stick dollar store speakers onto it. I would get some top end sound system for watching movies or something on it at least. Personally i can't stand headphones, the best of them don't touch what a solid stereo system can do.

This build looks quite good. I'd probably put an FX instead of the i5 but either way this is very solid

You will like the Dark Knight edition of that CPU cooler then. As far as MEM and GPU you are on your own to find what looks cool to you (at a cost increase I would imagine). Just make sure you get memory with similar specs. The Ares modules listed above are DDR3-1600 1.5 CL8.

I'll definitely look into that. Do you own one?

both builds waste a lot of cash... if it was me i'd do something more like this...

Yea, I really don't like that case.. And don't really care to spend over $30 on speakers when I'll probably have a headset on most of the time anyways.

If i was spending that much i'd make sure i at least had a GTX 780 to show for it. Or two 770s... it seems a shame you're spending that cash and not even getting a gpu that is faster then a 2yo gpu (the 7970)

The most power you'll need for a signle 770/780 is a solid 650w (XFX/Seasonic high efficiency rating) or 750w max.

Note: Corsair CX power supplies are cheap and known to fail under extended periods of high load. Not good for gaming/performance rigs.

Sabertooth mobo is a huge gimmick and actually hurts thermal performance at times. Toms and a few other tech sites have info about these. Don't get sucked into the sleek black bs, any decent manufacturers Z87 will do just fine.

The sweet spot for VALUE (ie. performance per $) is around $1500 for all hardware (excluding peripherals). Diminishing returns go way up after this point. This is why the jump from 770 to 780 is a real bad [economical] decision, the marginal cost vs. marginal benefit to performance is far from worth it, compared to going from the 760 to 770 for example. I am at work and unable to provide the exact #'s but I have done relative price/performance comparisons for each tier of upgrade in gpu's - you can too - and it isnt worth it.

Case is entirely your decision, not really worth taking peoples advice here because it is more personal than any other component. Many people love Antec 300's, and certain Fractal/Corsair cases that I never liked, so I went with a Carbide 400R because it suited me. Besides the front panel I/O's you want, airflow considerations and space for chunky cpu heatsinks (air coolers & radiators alike), its a complete crap-shoot.

I do plan on adding a second gpu not long after I have this built.. You might be right. Maybe I do need better speakers..

I've never heard anything bad about a Corsair power supply.. Everywhere I've read said that Corsair is one of the top manufacturers of psu's..

And on the mobo.. I've also haven't heard of any complaints. Everything I've read says it's a great mobo with an easy to use BIOS..

antec makes some of the best air cooled cases around. the 900 and 2 is simply epic for it's airflow, the eleven hundred is on the same level... not sure how you could do better short of an open air bench. about the only air cooled cases that might be better would be some silverstone cases like the raven or a few of their fortress series.

I agree on the sabretooth, that's why i suggested a different mb. the basic issue is not only is it not great on an intel system (it works great on an amd, mostly because the amd version has a different thermal armor design), and if you're going to spend 200 on a mb, you're better going for one of the ROG mbs, because they have superior sound and much better cooling then the sabretooth.

never had an issue with a corsair. i'm rolling with a cx400 right now, and not only is it powering my overclocked PhIIx4 965, and overclocked 7770GE, but it's doing so without a whisper of noise. Works great, 24/7. I suggested the seasonic because while corsair is excellent, there is no beating a good seasonic x series psu...
