I have an hp h8-1214 that i got from best buy. It supposedly has 300w psu, amd fx 6100, and an amd 7450.

I went to frys to get a new card, the amd 7750 because it was the best card for the current psu i have.

I installed it yesterday, the fans spin, however nothing is shown on my monitor. It goes into powersave mode as if nothing is connected to it at all.

Im beginning to think its my psu or the gpu is dead.

I cant test the gpu on any other computer and the pci slot isnt busted because my stock card (amd 7450) works fine when i put it back in.

Im fairly new to all of this upgrading stuff, any help is appreciated.

Try plugging the video plug from your monitor on a different slot, that may help. You may need to use the DVI to VGA adapter included with your new 7750.

Either you aren't plugging the monitor correctly (refer to manual) or you need to return your GPU and get it replaced.

Im using hdmi to monitor using an adapter that came with the monitor.

There was no adapter for dvi with my card.

Could power be the issue or is it more likely to be a busted unit? Now that i think about it, the box was semi open.

Also the sticker on the psu said 262 watts, not 300w.

perhaps you don't have enough power? Try to see if you can get a new PSU.
Also if you want better performance for like $5 less, try the 7770 GHz edition, as I've seen the MSI version retail at about $95.

I'd go more with a Corsair CX430, which is only $30 - $40 and if your gpu doesn't work it won't be the PSU because corsairs don't normally fail.

There was a coolmaster 500w for 50 bucks at frys. Should i try getting that and replacing the gpu with a 7770 since ill have more power? I kind of want the asus one as it seems smaller and the gigabyte is a behemoth..

If it is a psu issue, do my current symptoms check out? Like the fans spinning and pc coming on but no display whatsoever (Not even bios)

Yes those are symptoms of a low power PSU. It can supply power for the basic functions, but it can't power the GPU its self. The ones I posted above are much cheaper than $50 FYI. and you would like a 7770 or a 7790 much better.

Is coolmaster a good brand or will it atleast get the job done for a 7750 or 7770?

I'm pretty sure that a 430w PSU will be fine, however to get the best efficiency, you'd be better off with a 500w PSU

For better efficiency go with an Antec or Corsair or Seasonic PSU as those are mostly 80+ rated for <$50, and cooler master isn't the greatest brand...

So i went and got a lepa 500w.

Hooked it up, then realized the atx 12v connection on my board is 4 pins and the one on the psu is 6.

Is there a way around this?!

That might be a GPU connector (they are 6 (+2) pin). The 12v connectors should be 4+4, you only need to plug in one 4 pin head.

I only had a 6 pin and a 6+2 after i connected everything.

On the box it says it has a 24 pin main power, 4 pin peripheral, 6 pin pci-e, 6 pin + 2 pci-e, sata, 4 pin floppy, and a 4+4 pin CPU.

Im guessing the 4+4 pin is the one i need to use but i couldve sworn i only had the pci cables left once i hooked it up.

Also, the 4+4 is one solid piece. Its not broken in half. Do i have to split it myself?

Thats not good. If it says 4+4 on the box, it should be two separate things...
Where did you have the 4+4 connector plugged in?

On further inspection, it seems like the 4+4 pin is break-off-able. But is this really the right cord? Its black and yellow wires and it has the mesh cover on the outside.

Is this what im supposed to hook into the atx 12v molex slot?

There are two connectors on your motherboard, the 24-pin ATX connector, and a 4 or 8 pin CPU power connector. If this is the power connector near the CPU, then yes, the 4+4 should go there.

So do I just break this 8 pin into 2 fours with a little force?

It should come apart with little effort. You said that it seems like its supposed to come apart, it should. Make sure everything is unplugged!

I just opened my pc. I dont see a place where i couldve used that 8 pin. I must have over looked it once I panicked and thought that i needed to use a PCI-E cable there.

FML

So, i guess im going to put her down for another surgery and try this 4 pin.

I guess my next question would be, if this works, do I need to uninstall my previous gfx driviers? Also, will it be able to display through HDMI on boot with the new GPU or do I need to get a VGA cable?

You should be able to boot through the GPU, itll just be a really poor resolution until you get the drivers installed.

PSU WORKS!!!!! Ahhhh im so happy.

Ok so now im gonna put in the gpu and see if it works now. Is there any danger of having a 500w with my current build if i choose to leave my old gpu in there?

Dang, looks like it is your GPU. Did you get the 7770 or the 7790?
YouLL have to replace the GPU.

Im gonna head out to Fry's and return the AMD 7750 for the 7770.

I still have this feeling in my gut that its not going to work no matter what I do. But maybe it will...

This new PSU I have in my unit seems a bit louder... I hope thats normal. lol.

Ill let you know what happens with the 7770

This PSU has this awful rattling sound coming out of it. When I put my band on the back valve it stops, but without it is unbearably loud.

Wtf?!

edit: When I press the cords from the inside back into the unit it stops as well. Jesus christ.... this is a nightmare lol

Im gonna return everything back to frys and either get all diff branded stuff or order it from newegg. This has been an embarresment of hassle. :( ((

Buy the CX430M it's modular and you only have to hook up:
Assuming you only have that card:
1. 24pin MOBO power connector
2. 4/8 pin CPU connector
3. GPU 6 pin connector

With that you will only need to plug in 3 cables to your power supply. That would be a good option.

Will the CX430m work with an AMD 7770?

Also - Another person suggested that I may need to go into the BIOS and set it to display through PCI-E.

This card didnt use the PCI-E cable from the PSU, so is it really a PCI-E card? Would I need to do this anyway or should windows default to it on its own?

Another suggestion Ive seen is that because the GPU is drawing power from the mobo, it may not be getting enough. They suggested to find a card that DOES use an external cable.

Does anyone know of a card similar to the 7750 or 7770 that uses the PCI-E cables?

Exchanged the parts for new ones and it worked. Thanks for everyone that helped.

My suggestion to anyone looking to upgrade their hp h8-1214:

Get a GPU that needs external power. (Uses the 6 pin pci-e cable)

The msi afterburner r7770 has this and works like a charm. Also, you have to get a 500w psu

you don't need a 500w psu, that's under load, and the 7770 doesn't really go under load. if it does your performance will be pretty bad so the 430m is fine.
