I am building out a new server and I am using a Supermicro SC745 TQ-R920B chassis. My mobo and raid controllers are both SAS2/SATA iii. The backplane on the chassis is a SAS743TQ, which is listed as a SAS and not a SAS 2 backplane. Now it seems to me the besides basic diagnostics a backplane is just a physical connection and so it would not matter. So my question is, will that backplane work with SATA iii/SAS2? Thanks!

Solution
it should work perfectly fine, both standards are backwards compatible.

just remember sas drives wont run on an sata port but sata drives will run on sas and you should not have any problems.

Thanks! Just as you posted Supermicro also called back and confirmed all that mattered is the controller and drive, not the backplane.
