I have owned a sapphire 7870 OC edition which came with the random black screen sound loop card crash error since the card was first released (after tens of hours of forum searching i learned that this was a manafacturer defect in almost all 7870s) and i'm finally looking at upgrading. The only remedy that i've done for this crash is to downclock the card from the factory 1050/1200 to 850/1000 which is so upsetting that i have to downclock a card for stability. I am really interested in the 7970 vapor x edition but if those also come with this error i'd just get a gtx 770. Does anyone who have these cards have any input for my current predicament? Thank you.

I've also had experience with HD7870s having this fault, in particular a PC I built for a friend with the Sapphire version of the card. Sapphire are making him jump through hoops to get a new version of the card which are apparently fixed, but I think they are going to send one.

On topic though, I'm pretty much 100% sure that the 7970 doesn't have the same problem and even if it initially did, hardware revisions will likely have fixed any faults as it's quite a mature card. Saying that it's still superior to the GTX770 in most situations and where it does lose out (which is seldom) it does so by a small percentage. It's also around the same price so I'd go for the 7970, specifically a GHz edition :)

just go with a GTX 770 because just to be sure that those issues will never be problem again. plus, a GTX 770 is more powerful than an HD 7970, it is cooler and more efficient too. it is also newer and newer cards will give you 1 or 2 generations more before a need to upgrade it. the HD 7000 series is nearing its end though.

Well, one of the reasons that i'm going for the 7970 is that i play a lot of arma 2 and soon to be arma 3 and video memory is a big factor for that engine. Also i really love the actual performance of the 7970s that i've seen and the only problem with them (flimsy PCB) was addressed in the vapor x edition

I have a Sapphire HD7950 and the PCB does bend a little, but it's had loads of time at 100% load and it's cool running and the bendiness has never caused a problem, and yes, the Vapour X edition does have a beefier PCB, or at least the heatsink supports it better so there's no bending.
