Hey I just got my cable speed upgraded and was doing some speedtests. My equipment is

Netgear CMD311 Modem
Linksys WRT300N v1.1 Wireless N Router

When I test ethernet, it gets very good like 75 mbps, but through wireless it gets 20mbps on my laptop and more like 13 mbps on my desktop wireless.

Both computers were in very close range to the router (like 20 feet)

I know wired is much better but it shouldn't be losing THIS much should it?

Any ideas on how to fix?

Thank you

Tested a few times one at the 7 feet mark and a few times tested in another room.

They consistently ranged from about 17-20 so not too different.

I fully expect to not get the same speed as ethernet, but is the difference usually so drastic?

edit: just tested upstairs as well and got 18

No you should be getting faster speeds than that, do you have an older laptop? The receiver in your laptop might be an older generation and not accept more than the 17-18 mbps. This could be the same issue with your desktop unless you can test the desktop a little closer and rule that out. If that is not the case I would say it's your router. Try getting a new slightly better class router, keep the receipt to return it if that doesn't fix the issue.

No it is a pretty new i7 inspiron - weird - firmware issue? Do custom firmwares like DDWRT help with things like this?
