I have a newly acquired Msi wind U90 netboo with Ubuntu installed on it. I only have about 4 days to get XP installed on it for a friend. I promised I could as ive done it easily before (on a U100). This time I have had nothing but trouble. Please can someone help me. Ive tried Netubootin, Wintoflash, REMprep for formatting, My XP disc turned into a iso, a supposedly usb ready (whatever that mean)s copy of XP, nothing works!
Most of the time im getting this message.
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: Windows Root\System32\hal.dll. please reinstall a copy of the above file.
Is Ubuntu or a partion problem causing this. Do I have to modify the boot.ini?
Please please help. My times running out and I hate to let people down.
Thanks

Hi

Are you trying to replace Linux or have both on same disk (dual boot)

Do you have access to a USB DVD disk drive, then you do not have to worry about making a USB memory stick bootable . Just use a Windows XP CD

However you may still have problems removing some Linux boot managers & MBR using a Windows boot disk

You need a tool to clear MBR or try a Linux boot disk such as Parted Magic to remove partition information and re partition & format as NTFS a Windows partition

What version of XP CD did you start with ?
Microsoft OEM System Builder
Microsoft Retail
manufacturers OEM (bad idea unless from MSI)
what service pack 0, 1 2 or 3 ?

Are you talking about crashing (BSOD) when booting up XP disk
or after files copied to...

or after files copied to hard drive but before installation finishes

best of luck

I want to install XP over Ubuntu. I have a 16gb Cruz Edge sandisk usb stick. Im using XPPROSP3 OEM I think. not retail or manufacturer.
Got the netbook off ebay. Ubuntu wont let me format (within os) because its password protected for admin use only. Not familiar with the os at all. (how would I go about using this parted magic?) It dosent really crash. It never gets passed the boot loader. Says files are missing etc. or it freezes. Ive seen one instance of unetbootin looping (count down 0 to 10 and 0 to 10 again). Hope this is enough info. This is really frustrating I tells ya.

UPDATE. I sorted this :) Had to reformat the HDD for XP
