PSU or GFX freezing system? (Crysis 3 crash fixed, idle freeze still a problem)

Hello Tom

My newest setup:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
MSI 970A-G46 (Brand new)
AMD Black Edition - AMD Phenom II X4 955 - 3.2 GHz (Brand new)
Kingston HyperX Genesis XMP X2 Grey Series 4GBx2 (Brand new)
Seagate Barracuda 1TB (Brand new)
Gainward 450 GTS 1024MB (few years old)
ThermalTake ToughPower 750Watt (few years old)

So, when i play Minecraft, Starcraft 2, World of Warplanes, pretty games like these, not the most requiring, all at high-to-highest settings, my computer is the best Ive ever had. Not once has it frozen on me during these games.

If I play Crysis 3 or Bioshock 3, GFX-driver will eventually, usually within 10 minutes, crash and shut down the game. This is, however, not what annoys me the most.

Browsing the internet with any browser will sometimes make the GFX-driver crash. Computer freezes for a few seconds, then comes back. But sometimes it just plain out freezes for good! Nothing to do but hit the I/O switch.

So, the closer my computer is to idle, without being completely idle, the bigger the chance of a complete freeze is. It is worth mentioning too, that not once did this happen watching a YouTube video. Browsing text seems to be the biggest issue.

I am at a loss!

Thanks in advance

Nicholas

Your GPU is most likely causing the isues. Have you dusted out the GPU? If not do that, it may help. Is your new CPU overclocked?

Some time ago yes, but its not very dirty. GPU is stock and never exceeds 46 C. Problem occurs with CPU running stock speed or at slightly clocked, never exceeding 55 C.

I just downloaded Gainwards EXPERTool, I wonder if it would help to clock it down a bit? I just tried Crysis again with GPU cooler running at 100% all the time via EXPERTool. No change.

That would explain the Crysis 3 and Bioshock 3 problems. Not the random internet-browsing freeze :(  I hate throwing out stuff that will do the job just fine. The only reason i stopped using my 7800GT was because it didnt support DX11 ;)

What freaks me out is, it NEVER happens when i play SC2 high-settings.

Each game is different, some are more GPU intensive and some are cpu dependent

Yes, I know. Planetside 2 doesnt freeze anything, that game should be able to outload both my CPU and GPU by quite a bit. Still, Firefox seems to do the trick!

Crysis 3 is FIXED. I Downloaded MSI Afterburner and upped my Core Voltage by 0.1 (From 1.050 to 1.150 on my 450 GTS)

I will report back if this is the fix for my idle crashes as well, although I have a feeling, reading around Toms, that the idle crash is a RAM error, they might need to be lowered in Voltage.

Please not I have not changed ANY voltage before, only now to attempt to fix errors.

This is where i found my solution:
