Seagate HDD changes names in BIOS

So I just got this used 2TB Seagate HDD off Amazon, and it's been giving me a ton of trouble. Most glaringly, it often simply does not show up in the BIOS. When it does, it equally as often doesn't show up as an option during the installation of Windows 7.

However, I have gotten it to work. The first time it was super slow after installation and the explorer would time out and BSOD. Reformatted it after that, and repeated this process a couple times for the same reason. Second time, it manages to install some critical updates, but it got stuck in a loop after restarting to finish configuring the updates. Reformatted again. Today (7/19/13) I got the whole thing to go perfectly. Updates installed, graphics drivers installed, etc. I even managed to download Steam and played a game for a few hours.

Much to my chagrin, as soon as I get back from grabbing some snacks, I find I've returned to a rebooting computer, which is booting from the Windows cd. When I try to boot from the hard drive, I noticed that the HDD's name has changed once again (because this has happened before during my previous troubles) from
ST2000DM001-1CH164 to simply ST2000DM001
What does this mean, and why is it keeping me from booting normally? Thanks in advance for any help

I should also mention that now that the drive is missing the -1CH164 suffix, the BIOS gives me a DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER message whenever it tries to boot without the Windows installation disc. When the disc is in, it has gone back to not detecting the hard drive at all in the Custom Advanced Setup screen (in addition to the Repair screen). Hope this helps.
