[Stupid Question] Duel Titans

I'm currently planning on doing a build with duel titans (don't lecture me about price or bang for your buck -.-) and someone told me that the reference cooling setup isn't that great. I don't plan on overclocking these or anything.

I was wondering if high end fan coolers will keep these things at an acceptable temperature or if I'll have no choice but to go to liquid cooling (which I have lots of concerns about)

Sorry if this is the wrong section or anything, I just registered my account here and thought that I'd ask.

Solution

The 1st and 3rd slots are true x16 so for optimal performance you will want to pick these slots. This configuration...

Sorry I'm borderline mentally retarded when it comes to spelling.

As far as the case goes I was planning on purchasing a "COOLER MASTER HAF 932 Advanced RC-932-KKN5-GP Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case with USB 3.0, Black Interior and Four Fans-1x 230mm front RED LED fan, 1x 140mm rear fan, 1x 230mm top fan, and 1x 230mm side fan"

or

"Corsair Obsidian Series 800D CC800DW Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case"

Motherboard: "ASUS Rampage IV Extreme LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Extended ATX Intel Motherboard" (Again, I don't need a lecture that this motherboard isn't necessary :p)

Price is literally not an issue, however the cooling might be. I know this is probably available somewhere but could you give me a quick summary about the difference between the two GPUs?(the main thing that I notice is 3gb ram difference and "CUDA cores" being slightly different) Is it worth it (purely performance wise, price not being a consideration) to downgrade to the 780 just for the aftermarket cooling?

Oh, also I'm aware that a new graphics card is coming up in September..I'm just speaking hypothetically until then.

I'd take an aftermarket 780 over a Titan in a heartbeat. The two share the GK110 core, the 780's has a few SMX's lasered off (whatever those are...), a higher base clock and the 6GB memory cut to 3GB, other than that they are literally the same card. The difference is about a 7% gap in performance, in favour of the Titan.

An aftermarket cooler is very important because of overclocking, the cooler you can have the card the higher you can overclock it at the same noise level before you run into the 90C recommended thermal barrier. Most review sites state things like the EVGA, Gigabyte and Asus cards are near silent after overclocks, even if they are a little over 80C. I use a reference 780 and while its surprisingly quiet for a blower when at 1200Mhz, it cant hold a candle to some of the aftermarket solutions I've heard.

Also, seeing as the Titan and 780 share a 250w TDP (which is incredibly annoying), they overclock to about the same speed.

The 1st and 3rd slots are true x16 so for optimal performance you will want to pick these slots. This configuration will choke the top card so a water block would be optimal. Alternatively you can configure a x16/x8 SLI and enable better air flow and use reference design coolers and a intake fan above the cards would be beneficial.

Both cases are nice, the 800D is a little excessive so may be a better match for the rest of your system :)

Solution
As previously stated the titan is simply a dying card, Nvidias standard cards are going to be rivaling it very soon, and with the price difference its well worth the lower tier cards. If you simply have to have the titans alot of airflow is needed to keep them cool. Slomo's configuration will get them running at more reasonable temps. The 780 with EVGA or Gigabyte coolers will run at much lower temps and also offer near the same performance. If you are willing to go AMD something from the 9000 series might even beat the 780, but that is just a speculation at this point.

I realized that the gap in performance would be small, but I didn’t understand that it would be to that degree. I think I’ll take your advice and get at least duel 780’s with aftermarket cooling in favor of the titans.

I’m not necessarily sure that I’ll be overclocking but either way I’ll setup aftermarket cooling just in case. I appreciate your advice!

I’m not comfortable using a water block at all. Is there another mobo that would be better suited to what I’m doing? (something with better positioned SLI slots?).

Thanks for the general advice though, I’m definitely going to put it to use!

Thanks for your input, it sounds like the 780’s are the way to go then.

The ASRock X79 Champion has a PCIe1/PCIe5 x16/16 mode which will give you a two slot gap between the top and bottom card.

That board has pretty bad reviews :/ Thanks though, now that I have a general idea I'll look for something with a two slot gap between x16s.
