Hello,

I've been browsing for a new computer and I've just stumbled upon a problem. I have two computers to choose from. They're similar except for the fact that one has an i7 3630QM an the other one has an i5 3210M. The graphics cards are very similar (the first one has GT 730M 4GB VRAM, whereas the second one has a GT 640M 2GB VRAM). Also, the second one has only 2GB of RAM (as opposed to the 8GB's of the first one), but I guess putting more RAM in wouldn't cost too much. The first one is about 100 euros (or 133 U.S. dollars) more expensive than the second one. I will use the computers for gaming, and I definitely want to play the newest games on it. I don't care about incredibly high graphics, I care more about the gameplay, so playing on mid settings wouldn't bother me too much. So, could somebody help me out? Which one would you buy?

P.S. Will the 4GB VRAM help the graphics card out, or does it make no real difference?

Solution
RAM can be upgraded.
4GB of VRAM is WAAAAYYYY pointless but the GT730m is still slightly better for gaming.
Although there are gonna be a few games that you will have to play at low on any of those laptops...

What is your budget?

I have a Dell XPS with the GT 640m(with 2GB VRAM GRRD5), an I7-3612, 16 GB RAM and its running a 1080p monitor.

I can say that Graphically, it can play pretty much anything fairly average FPS, but if you put the program/game on RAMdisk(Id recommend getting plenty of RAM for this reason). When "Shogun 2: Total WAR" is on RAMrisk im getting fluid fps at nearly max settings, so im very happy with this. When it comes to photoshop and aftereffects the hyper-threading(i7 only) comes in handy. If your heavy on gaming id neglect the i7, embrace the 730m and unless using RAMdisk you could get on with 4-6GB RAM. Processor isnt needed nearly as much for gaming, neither is RAM, while the VRAM isnt first priority, you'll get much better performance over the 640m.

If I could upgrade my laptop further, itd have to be the 640m to a higher card. Graphics card and SSD always make the biggest difference in gaming

That's a nice one. Just the graphics card - how good is it?
