Newbie question. I have a PSU that haven't been used for about 5 years. Is it safe to use it now? Does the PSU degrades over time even if is not being used?

Thanks.

Solution
Caps tend to leak with use(and heat generated from use).

The problem with long times without use could be caps drying(electrolytic caps do this.) out. I think it would take more than 5 years.

On the same note, I pulled some caps from a drill charger WAY older than 5 years not used for much longer and they still work :). Bad caps are much more of an issue when used for long times at hot temperatures.

What power supply is it anyway?
Depends on the quality of the caps in the power supply. If there cheap ones they can bulge and leak. Your best bet is use a CPU fan or load and green wire jump the power supply on a table outside for 10 min and then check that there no smoke or leaking caps.
