So,with the announcement of the playstation 4 I was unable to decide where to spend my money on.Im hardcore call of duty fan,but I'm also a big playstation fan.I am going to buy the ps4 within the 1st year of release and play all games on it except call of duty, strategy and DOTA-like games. As I am going to buy the Ps4 I want to be able to play cod on PC for about 2 more years, when I will have money again for full upgrade. So,I was thinking what sub-100 euros upgrades I could do to boost the performance in call of duty and games in general. Is adding more ram going to produce more fps in games?
Current system:
Intel core 2 duo e8400 3.00ghz
2gb DDR2 RAM
1tb sata 2 hdd
Asrock P45XE
1240x1080 monitor
Gainward Nvidia GeForce 9800gt 1gb edition

Solution
To be fair, my brother still uses a Core 2 Duo E7200 and GTS 250 system, and games such as DOTA 2, CS: GO and older Call of Duty titles with little issue. The settings may need tweaking and you won't always get highest quality, but I'd say the E8400 still has plenty of life in it.

If you have a friend who knows how to overclock, or simply want to try it yourself, you may be surprised at the results.

Otherwise, another 2GB of RAM will help things a lot. However, you would likely need a new 64-bit OS to take advantage of that.

if you don't mind playing on low settings, a ram upgrade will be good. If you want to play on higher settings, you will definitely need to upgrade your gpu and ram.

In your case, depending on the game, the gpu will be the bottleneck, not the ram, however, more ram will speed up your system as a whole.

unless you can pick up a decent core 2 quad cheap, q9400 (will easily oc to 3.6, i had one) or higher and overclock and replace your gpu to something newer, 7870 would be a good start forget it. your cpu just cant hang with the big boys anymore i recently upgraded the gpu on a mates sys, e8400@ 3.6ghz for bf3 and the cpu couldnt keep up with the gpu, he had 8gb of ddr3 also
