Why do I idle so hot?

Hello Toms,

I currently am running a 965 BE overclocked to 4ghz@1.45v. I max out at around 53c at full load, but can't seem to dip below 35c while idle. Ambient room temps are around 23c.

My current setup is a 965 BE (Cooler Master 212+), HD7850, ASRock Extreme4.

As far as my case fans go, I have 2 intake and 3 exhaust.
Intakes are on the bottom and in the front.
I have 2 exhausts on the top and 1 on the rear.
My cable management is nothing short of excellent.
Am I doing anything wrong or is this simply something that I'll run into with such a budget case/fans?

Thanks,

Eyedeology

My guess without knowing exactly what case you have or pics to go off of, you have a bad seating of your cooler. Get some reputable thermal grease like Artic MX-4 or Tuniq Tx-4

Try this:
1) unmount
2) clean both surfaces thoroughly with rubbing alcohol and qtip
3) apply a BB sized dot of thermal grease
4) seat cooler flat - do not lay at an angle!
5) tighten mounts evenly a little as you go around to insure flat contact
6) go into bios and adjust Qfan or cpu fan bios option to higher performance profile

How long has this computer been in production?

You should reapply thermal compound to your processor and heatsink. It is possible that it has shifted, wasn't applied properly or has some other issue.

I have already attempted to reapply thermal paste. I used the dual ArtciClean solution to clean/cleanse my surfaces, and then added ThermalFusion 400.

Is it safe to say that my fan setup is just subpar?

Ok - describe you application process - it is very possible something went wrong.

Most common errors:
applying too much, or incorrectly leaving gaps in contact
lifting or moving after seating breaking contact surface
not seating flat leaving uneven surface

I added a small pea in the center of the CPU and then spread it out with a business card. upon getting a slim layer that nearly covered the chip, I added an additional but much smaller pea on the center. I then proceeded to install the cooler. How did I do? :/

Likely too much actually - Like I said BBsized flattened by pressure is more than enough. Your process laid 2-3x the amount really needed. So very possible you have uneven contact and/or insulating amounts.

That said, 53c on full load isn't bad, but not sure if that is really 100% load temps, given 35c at idle. idle at 35c isn't great but not bad either. would expect with in 10c of ambient on idle on that cooler. So any further messing with it is your call, as you are not in a dnagerous zone in anyway from the data you have provided
