Recent Heat Issue with GPU

Hi- I've had my PC for about 4-5 years and use it mostly for gaming. I've never had any real issues with it and can usually run most games at High quality without a problem. Lately though, my GPU (ATI Radeon 4850) has been heating up like crazy. Using CPUID HWMonitor, it idles at about 60 degrees Celsius- which doesnt concern me so much as that when running a game it shoots up to 95-100 degrees Celsius. I used MSI Afterburner to control the GPU fan speed, which now keeps it right around 97 degrees in game, which definitely seems too hot! I took the GPU out and cleaned it, as well as both fans in my computer, which didnt seem to have any effect. I recently ordered some new thermal paste and will apply that when it is delivered. However, it seems to me that old/bad thermal paste alone wouldnt cause the GPU to hit 100 degrees C. Am I correct in thinking that?

Any explaination as to why my GPU is getting to hot would be appreciated!

Mosty likely, overtime, the PCB of the gpu has warped and has caused the heatsink and gpu to lose contact. I think replacing the thermal paste will do the trick. just make sure you do it properly :p
