Hey everyone!
I recently started getting a black screen of death on start up right after the windows logo. I can boot normally with out gtx 580 drivers and in safe mode but as soon as I install any gtx 580 drivers I get blacked/blue screened depending on the driver. I know others have had similar problems with asus mobos and gtx 580s but I cant seem to find a solution. I currently have asus rampage IV gene mobo and geforce gtx 580. Ive tried just about everything and Im running out of ideas. Any input would help!!!!!!
Thanks,
CB

get the latest drivers and bios for the motherboard. it sounds like 1 of 3 things... either you have chipset driver corruption, or you have video card driver corruption or you have a dying gpu.

i would uninstall everything you have that has anything to do with nvidia and start from scratch. install the latest mb drivers and bios, and see if that handles the issue. if it doesn't i'd try another gpu and see if the problem replicates (ideally an nvidia). if the problem doesn't replicate on your machine, and if you take that gpu to another pc and get the same problem, i think we can only conclude your gpu is dying at that point.

Thanks for the fast response ingtar,
I actually just reinstalled windows, updated my mobo and bios drivers and still no luck. I dont have another graphics card on hand but cant you go and get gpus tested at like a local computer store? The card I have is under warranty and im considering sending it back in for a new one although it might not be the problem.

is your gpu identified in windows safe mode? or does it just show up as "vga" device?

Its identified as vga device. If I install the gtx drivers and then go into safe mode it will identified as geforce gtx 580.

i'd take it to a store to see if it's the card or not. sounds like it's either the card or drivers. you can also try an older nvidia driver see if that works. something like 318.22 whql or earlier.

Yeah I think im going to have to take the card in. Ive tried all the way back to 306 whql and cant get any of them to work. So even if i can boot normally without drivers and in safe mode you still think the card could be broken. I was under the impression that if the system was running its a software and not a hardware problem.

nope. gps can die and still work enough to give you graphics. i've had it happen to me before. i had a 5770 which would work in safe mode but would not work in any other mode. nor would it work with the radeon drivers. it was stuck on 640x480 resolution and 16bit color and would only work as a generic vga.

I have a Gainwind NVidia GTX 580 Z68XP-D3 with overclocking (never overclocked) on a 311.06 (18/1/13).

SOLUTION: I had the same issue black screen generally in a gaming mode when GPU was working hardest, but sound still working etc. What was frustrating was the PC when restarted would not load the graphics card. I reconnected screen thru the hdmi output on the mother card, started in safe mode and PC was fully functioning, screen worked, but graphics card appeared dead. It was inconsistent, I could come back hours later and all was right, and inconsistently I could start the card, but again it would later fail shortly into a game. The failure seemed to screw up the card, so re-starting increasing was inconsistent to the point machine was unreliable.

I went back to my PC supplier he advised to vacuum out the PC, all fans, graphics card etc and load up the latest driver (332.21). Sure enough I did that. The new drivers provided the GE force experience software to optimise game mode and identify latest drivers. I feel the latest drivers are running the fan harder. I also loaded GainWind expert tool to look at fan and temperature, it also suggests and loads a higher fan operation. But the clean up was the major contributor.

Cutting a long story short - the machine has not stalled since cleaning and updating drivers. Graphics card is operating without problems but I can see how hard the games push the card and how the latest drivers are making the fan run at 100% almost as soon as you load a game.

My machine was not that dusty but the build up on the card and vents was sufficient to affect the efficiency of the cooling materially (causing a fine insulation layer on all surfaces). I did not realise how hot the machine and card core was getting. Hope this works for u - I didn't see any other real solutions for this on the various web sites. Its been a few weeks of consistent operation. Got my confidence to keep the drivers up to date too. Good luck. Check it out.

Did you find a solution to this? I'm having the same problem with my gtx580 and wondering if I should just buy a new card?
