Intel StepSpeed slows down my pc to 400MHz!

Hi All,

I've noticed that sometimes Intel StepSpeed reduces the multiplier to 2x and bus speed to 200MHz so my core speed drops to 400MHz. At that speed, Task Manager uses up to 50% of my CPU, while my core temperatures are around 31C. I have Latitude E5400 laptop, 4GB memory, 2.26GHz CPU. All of this happens even if I use 'High performance' option in Windows / Control Panel / power options. I must say that most of the time everything is ok, but then suddenly, computer slows down considerably, and I just leave it on while it finishes - 15-20 minutes, and frequency restores to higher levels.

I have also tried disabling StepSpeed in BIOS, but when it's disabled, it puts my computer at 1.5GHz constant. While this ensures that I won't fall down to 400MHz, it is sub-optimal way of running my pc.

I understand that Windows manages the multiplier to reduce Core speed and optimise power consumption when cpu is not in use. What I was seeing is that when I was using my computer, it unexpectedly dropped the frequency to very low levels. The question is: How do I prevent Intel StepSpeed from poorly managing my cpu speed? Is there a probrag which will help me fix my frequency and multiplier from Windows? I don't want to overclock my computer, just want to make it work within designed parameters...

Thanks!

Edit: Doh, nevermind.

If you don't want to disable speedstep, I don't think there's much you can do other than fiddle with power settings.
