Games cause computer to restart

Hey :) Don't know if this is the correct category but I hope I can get help.

I just want to try and wrap my head around this problem that my damn computer seems to be experiencing and its driving me crazy :\

Not too recently (in fact its been like this for a while) my computer has been experiencing frequent shutdowns/auto resets while attempting to play any sort of game (including those that are not very taxing on the computer, such as internet browser games or low graphics games). It will run fine for a few minutes then suddenly the games sound will freeze for a second, the screen will go black, and the computer will restart.

One thing that I noticed was that before the computer restarts the monitor will go into 'sleep mode'. This sleep mode phase also happens after the computer has done its restarting. Before the desktop pops up the screen will enter sleep mode and the sound will continue as if the monitor was the problem. I did some digging on google about wether or not this sleep mode is causing it, but it ended with the monitor not being a problem. I attempted swapping monitors, hdmi cables, and other possibly conflicting devices. I started looking for other causes, like overheating CPU and such, however the temperatures were all stable (at around 40C ingame.).

After a bit more testing and researching I deducted that it was in fact not a software or driver problem. I tried formatting the hard drive and completely wiping everything, then reinstalling windows 7 and such, but to no avail.

After a while I just decided to leave the computer be for a while, which sadly got my hopes up then down again. It started working for a good day or too like normal without any problems then suddenly started experiencing the problems again. I have looked around and other people seem to be having the same problems somewhere along the line but there are not many answered questions, or at least ones that are confirmed working in this type of situation.

Basically what I want to try learn is what needs to be done to get this restart problem fixed. I think I might either need to get a new graphics card, or simply just bomb the computer and get another. I know that software and drivers are not the problem, so it must be hardware. It all happened for absolutely no reason out of nowhere too :(

Specs if needed:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz
Memory (RAM): 8.00GB
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580
Gaming Graphics: 4095 MB (I am clueless as to what this is)
Hard Drive: 918GB
Manufacturer: Alienware Aurora-R3 (yes I know, overpriced hehe)
System Type: 64bit
Monitor: Dell S2340L 1920x1080

If anyone can give me some information I will be as happy as humanly possible.
I may consider just trashing it and getting another, this computer has drove me insane too many times :) Cheers

These things can be very hard to trace as you don't usually get any hints as to the cause. The most likely causes would be PSU, Ram, GPU, motherboard and CPU in no particular order.

I would start with he ram. As you have 8Gb I assume you have at least 2 x sticks. Remove 1 and test your system. If it fails swap sticks and test again. It's less likely you have 2x bad sticks but still possible.

If you have another GPU you can try (borrow from a friend?) and put that in and retest. Make sure you remove the old drivers first before shutting down Windows, turning off the machine and replacing the gfx card.

If you have access to another PSU swap it out and retest. Also make sure it's not blocked up with dust causing it to overheat...

GPU temperatures? From what you say looks like gpu problem.. I mean, you did a lot to isolate the issue, the next obvious step is to try another video card if possibly but you know that already.. anyway, good luck

Motherboard and CPU would be hard to check if you don't have replacements and you would most likely need some shop help with that.

Good luck

I never considered that, maybe it could be the power.

Ill try swap the GPU out with my brothers computer (which also happens to be an Alienware of the same brand) and see what happens. If it seems to move along smoothly I will replace it. As for the Motherboard and CPU, well, ill do something about that.
