Diagnostics (+repair?) software for HDDs

Solution
Repair shops may have paid tools to help recovery data that might be better than the free stuff but the free stuff is pretty danged good imo.

Diagnsotic tools are everywhere. no need to pay for them. Download and make yourself a hirens boot disk. Lots of good free tools on there including manufacturers diagnostic utilitites.

Isn't there some software people use to diagnose such things in say computer repair shops?

No "magic tool", sorry". Computer repair shops use the manufacturers diagnostic tools, because they need the report to rma the disks.
