Suspicions about GPU and computer fans failing

Hi,

I have been having many kinds of problems with my computer in the last half an year. I have suspicions there is something wrong with my GPU, fans and maybe some cooling problems. I am a PC enthusiast, but my knowledge on assembling desktop PCs is unfortunately pretty non-existent. I will explain the symptoms:

1. Starting the computer has become somewhat of a challenge. As I start the computer, there is a strong chance the fans start a wild spin and a loud noise. This can go on for minutes before settling down before ANYTHING appears on the screen. If wait for the noise go down and Windows to start, all sounds stutter when using the operating system (for example, listening to music and browsing the web at the same time) and the games have way worse fps than normally. The GPU fan doesn't speed up its spin as normally.

2. The image on my computer screen sometimes stutters or distorts for a half a second or goes completely black for the same duration. I have not found any connection to what I was doing on the computer.

3. Some games have started to crash my computer either to the desktop, or to a complete system crash. All this happens shortly after different kinds of small dots or squares (mostly white or black) appear to the screen, stopping the game and stuttering all sounds. If the computer survives with a crash to desktop, Windows reports the graphics driver crashing and becomes unstable.

4. Newest of these was today, when I finally managed to get past the spinning fans phase. An American Megatrends error appeared before Windows started saying that "Overclocking has failed! Please enter setup to reconfigure your system". Because I don't have any expertise in overclocking, I had to press F2 and choose "return to default settings". I think this removed any OC I had in the computer.

All of these problems I have been having are probably related to my GPU failing, but I would really appreciate wiser, desktop PC experienced people to say their opinions on this or suggesting their solutions to my problems. I am otherwise really by myself on this and can't fix it simply by googling some keywords.

I have thought of trying to fix all this with buying myself a new GPU such as GeForce GTX 650 so I wouldn't need to change my PSU. I, however, don't really know if this will fix my problems. Additionally, I find it hard to open up my computer for cleaning. The other side of the chassis seems to be locked up tight with a side fan which I don't dare to remove in the case I can't put it back. For this reason, it has been hard for me to dust the other side of the chassis.

My specifications are as follows. The computer was bought as components but installed by local respected PC components retailer five and a half years ago.

BFG GeForce 8800 GT 512MB OC
CoolerMaster CM 690 ATX-chassis
Intel Core Duo 2 E6750
Asus P5B I965P S775 Core 2 Duo SATA2, FSB1 motherboard
Antec 430W NeoHE 430 PSU
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit

Best regards,
Sampo

Some older cases had lock latches.you may have to press a button to unlock it or there a case lock on it. For your error on old pc will be three parts.
The CMOS battery...a few dollar part that anyone can change. The second part is caps drying out or bulging on old power supply. Replacing or testing with a known good power supply. The last is a gpu failure from age.
