How exactly do you use an anti-static wrist strap?

Planning to build a computer but since my house is mostly carpeted I think it be best to buy an anti-static wrist strap. I heard that you can attach the alligator clip to your case but it has to be unpainted and the problem with that is that my whole case is painted black. I also heard that you can attach the clip to your power supply while having it in your case and having it plugged into a wall outlet but the psu must be turned off. Where exactly should I connect the strap to? I'm sure I'm over-complicating a simple problem but I want to make sure I don't fry my parts.

Be sure to put the wrist-wrap on what ever arm is dominant. As to the part about attaching it to the PSU, you can, make sure it's off, have all 3-prongs plugged in, don't use a 3-2 prong connector. Even better if you can plug it into a power strip ( still be sure the power strips plug is plugged into a 3 prong-keep the power strip off too). Touching the case metal or any grounded metal every so often helps too. Better yet, build it in the bathroom, should be tile? jk on the last part.

Ok thanks. So I attach the the alligator clip to the fan opening of the psu. I forgot to mention that the psu is also painted I don't know if that should matter? Would it also a good idea to lay some cardboard on the carpet to stand on just for extra precaution? I'm sure static can still get past it or will I be ok with just the wrist strap? I'll keep the bathroom as a last resort haha

As long as the Fan opening isn't painted, just bare metal your good. Static from you ->anti static wrist band -> fan opening -> screws holding fan opening -> to inside PSU -> down cord and so = grounded lol Ummm ive never stood on cardboard before so I wouldn't know if that will help or make it worse. Rubber is good. just dont shuffle your feet, or rub any part of your body against the rugs or anything that can create static. Build on a wooden, or laminated table. Could you post the PSU link?

At first I was gonna say that the PSU is painted completely so it may not work. Apparently standing on cardboard can help minimize static too ( oddly ). Just mount the PSU to the case, plug it in, leave the switch in off position and mount your clip to it. If there is anything metal near you, wouldn't hurt to smack it once in a while lol. Oh, be sure to leave active electronics away from you too ( not to sure why some people recommend it tho ).. If your still worried after all that. Bring a wooden table into the bathroom and attach the alligator clip to the nearest metal pipe. : )

The easiest solution would be to not work on carpet completely right?I think I can make some room in my kitchen for the build,it has tile floor. So should I do it like this:have my case on kitchen table,put the psu in the case and connect it to an outlet but have the psu OFF and use the attach the alligator clip to the psu fan opening and I'll be good right?

lol...forgot about the kitchen ( Idk who has a carpeted kitchen haha ).. Moving to the kitchen on tile is safer. Over all yes. Just make sure no one comes over to watch you build it with any food or drink =D. Good luck on your build, be sure to post the finished product on here so we can all see it.
