Hi everyone,

I've just built my new PC and I have an issue with which I'm hoping to get some help & advice on.

I cannot get the system to remain in a low power state when selecting 'Sleep' from Windows :??:

It powers down for 30 seconds then wakes up again, sometimes straight to the Windows lock screen other times the screen remain black until I hit a key. If I immediately select 'Sleep' again, the screens, keyboard and mouse go off, but the system remains (fully?) powered (fans and graphics cards remain on).

Also sometimes, I cannot get the system to power off when I select 'Shut down' from Windows.
When I experience this, the only way I'm able to turn the system off is by pressing & holding down the power button on my case.

I wonder if this issue is related to the Haswell USB problem? I have no USB devices plugged in except my mouse and keyboard via the BenQ monitor USB hub.

I have updated my BIOS and reset to defaults but still no fix. I do not have Intel Rapid Start enabled (I think) because I could not install it on Windows as currently I have no Hard Disk Drive (only an SSD).

Hardware Spec below:

CPU: Intel Core i7 4770K 3.5GHz
Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth Z87 motherboard (BIOS version 1205 06/26/2013)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 4x 8GB @ 1600MHz
PSU: Corsair AX1200i (not using Corsair Link)

CPU cooler: Corsair H110
Boot drive: Sansung 840 PRO SSD
Graphics: eVGA GTX 780 dual (in dual SLI mode)
O/S: Windows 8 Pro
Case: Corsair Obsidian 900d

Please could someone offer me any pointers to get this resolved?

I am praying that it's not a hardware fault on the motherboard as it will be a pain to take the system apart (especially with the graphics cards as theyre liquid cooled)!

I will gladly supply any more information upon request.

Thanks for pointing this out.
I have looked and it says the Intel Ethernet Connection was the Wake source device. I have gone to the device properties and disabled it's Wake on LAN features...

It looks like windows is allowing something to wake the computer. Since you say that you only have your keyboard and mouse plugged into your computer then we will take a look at those first

1) Open your device manager by open run and typing "devmgmt.msc" (without quotes) this will open a windows with all of your hardware connected to your computer

2) Expand a category of your choice (I.e "keyboards" or "Mice and other pointing devices") and it should show your computers keyboard or mouse, right click on it and select "Properties"

3) A window should open with a few tabs along the left top of the window, select "power management" and you should see a collection of check boxes, one should say "Allow this device to wake the computer" If it is checked, un-check it and then press "OK"

4) Try sleeping your computer, and if that doesn't work then move onto the next device and start from step one.

OK I will try this in the next few minutes. But, will this also explain why the system doesn't shut down properly too?

"Wake History Count - 1"
It mentions my Ethernet controller: "Intel Ethernet Connection I217-V"

At first it was zero, I put it to sleep and it almost instantly came back awake. Then I got the above.

I don't remember a setting in BIOS/UEFI to disable Wake on LAN, unless anyone else knows where I would find it?

you can open your run window again and type "eventvwr" to get your event viewer open

1) Open Event viewer using the steps above

2) Expand the "Windows Logs" section

3) Click "System" and then press "Ctrl+F" to open the find dialog, you can then search for "Sleep" which will then highlight the last event involving "Sleep"

The results from the Event viewer will look like this:

The system has resumed from sleep.

Sleep Time: ‎2013‎-‎07‎-‎21T02:57:17.978025800Z
Wake Time: ‎2013‎-‎07‎-‎21T16:19:55.202001200Z

Wake Source: Power Button

I have looked and it says the Intel Ethernet Connection was the Wake source device. I have gone to the device properties and disabled it's Wake on LAN features.

When I try shutting the system down and now when I try to restart, windows appears to go off but the system does not drop full power.

Another observation is that Windows says I have 2 keyboards and 2 mice which is wrong. Going to boot up Windows again and see what happens when I put it to Sleep mode again...

OK after disabling the wake on LAN issue, I tried again and found that the system resumed from Sleep mode because of a wake timer set up by Samsung Magician which is the software that comes with the SSD I bought.

I disabled wake timers in Power options (Control Panel) and the system no longer resumes from sleep.

However, I still have the issue where sometimes the system will not fully power down when attempting to Shut Down, Restart or setting to Sleep mode from Windows.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Thanks for the help on this. Samsung Magician was causing the system to 'wake'.

I'm still having an issue whereby the system will not shutdown successfully if the system was put to sleep in the user session.

I have been in touch with Asus who have given me a couple of tips, which involve disconnecting components and trying to replicate the issue component by component. This will take me some time! The other option I've been given is to then try reinstalling Windows 8.

My concern at the moment is whether this is an issue with Windows 8 software or an issue with the Motherboard hardware. Guess I'll have to do some more investigating...

Does anyone have any useful hints to help me on this?
