I have to open up the computer, take the heatsink off, take the old paste off. apply the thermal paste, and them put the heatsink back on. Can i do this without ruining the computer? I dont see a problem other than the unlikely scenario where it drips all over the parts and ruins them

You should have no issue doing that, as long as you apply the correct amount. If you put to much it might seep onto the board but you can check that. If you use the right amount there is no issue at all. You can take the board out first and do it, but there really is no reason to.

So you are confirming that i will not have to take out the motherboard to do this, right? I just want to make sure and be careful because it's not just some change from my pocket it is almost $1300

Theres no reason to take it out, other than being able to reach stuff easier. Leaving it in has no negative consequences. Just look up a few tutorials on how much paste to use.
