I just built a new gaming computer and its the first desktop I have ever had. So I am not sure what I should do when I leave. I should put it to sleep, shut it down, or do otherwise when I leave. Whether its just over night or for when I leave weeks at a time what is the best for it? Thanks!

Your always smart to shut a pc down when not there. If a fan or power supply fails it can cause a lot of damage to your gaming rig. When you leave for a few weeks unplug it from the wall and the Ethernet cable to the cable modem. If there a lighting strike your pc won't be zapped as there no path to get into the pc. Most mb kills I see today are zaps into mb from Ethernet cables in lighting storm as most people now use good power strips or ups on there hardware.

just shut off your pc and unplug everything.. lol you can disassemble your pc too on the way if you want ^_^.

but yeah shut down and turn off psu. in my case I normally leave them open since I'm too lazy to press the button and wait 7 seconds for it to load.
