Hi,
Q: How do I install a CD-Rom in a Dell PowerEdge 1850 Server ?
I have the CD drive + its caddy and its short ribbon cable.

Q: Also these servers are cumbersome, and considerably heavier (39lb) than a PC, so would it be acceptable to mount these vertically on a wall ?
...or would this effect the HDD's & CD-Rom ?

Thanks.

Here are all the documents from Dell about your server.
http://www.dell.com/support/Manuals/us/en/19/Product/poweredge-1850 But looking on the Service manual, it does not seem to have internal CD ROM, so you might have to use external (USB) drive, or boot from USB flash drive.

This is rack-mounted server, so you have to make sure for yourself that the way you mount it is secure. Most CD/DVD drivers can work in both horizontal and vertical oritentation, so the mounting does not matter.

As for "hosting a couple of web sites" - start with something easier, like Ubuntu Server, and start reading on Apache configuration.

Why here ?:
I wasn't sure what other forum was relevant,
and I will be installing a Linux OS.

What forum would you advise ?

Server purpose:
Not sure what difference that makes to installing the CD-Rom,
or Server positioning...

But... I wish to host a few websites.

Hope this helps ?

So can you help ?

Many thanks, Mac
