Does this setup allow dual channel?

If I have a Crucial Ballistix Sport LP pair on one dual channel and a pair of G-Skills Snipers on the other dual channel, would it work as dual channel, or would it cause issues?

Solution

Yes, it does in most cases. Especially, with the latest motherboards it is known to work. What happens is that the higher speed (1866MHz) will be downclocked to the lower speed which is installed i.e, 1600MHz. Since, both the memory will run @ 1600MHz, it is still considered to run in dual channel only with one speed being underclocked.

So if the 8gb Crucial pair is running at 1600 with 9-9-9-24 timing and the 16gb G-Skills pair at 1866 with 9-10-9-28 timing, does it still work?

Might, but id so prob at 1600 at 9-9-9-24 or 27.....no guarantees, that's sort of what I meant with not knowing how big the sticks are, when people come for help they seldon mention what components they have. With DRAM, it's never a good idea to mix sticks, but if you already have them generally it doesn't hurt to try

If you have them, by all means try, as I suggested - do you want to buy to test....I wouldn't advise it 2 different base specs (1866 - 1600), different timings (the 1866 should run at CL8 at 1600), different densities (4GB sticks vs 8GB sticks)...........

Stupid Crucial Ballistix just came in and they were dead for a second time, as this is a replacement for my originals from newegg. They are a complete pain in the butt, but they came free so maybe I shouldn't be complaining too much...

That was why I ordered the G-Skills, as I had a feeling that the Crucial may not work again.

Yeah, the Ballistix Sport series is known to be plagued with problems; I heard that most people got it to work by underclocking it to 1333 mhz from the advertised 1600 mhz. I've decided to just get two pairs of the GSkill Snipers.
