I have a trusty old Dell D830 and now it worn't boot.
When trying to fire up the notebook I get an error, something like, "can't find hard drive"...
I tried inserting the WinXP CD and booting from the DVD drive and using the Windows Repair function, but it wouldn't work, again with an error about not being able to see the hard drive.
I pulled out the hard drive and hooked it up using a USB adapter to another PC and I can see the drive and 'all' of the folders so am hoping for some suggestions of what to try next... ???
Really (really!) don't want to wipe the drive and reinstall windows and all my applns!
FYI - I am able pull my data off the drive and back up the key files to a spare drive...
Is there some utility or procedure I can follow to get this drive to boot into windows ...???
Thanks and regards.

You likely have a failure of the boot section of the HDD. Personally, I would replace it with a SSD. Do a fresh install of the OS and use the old HDD as a second drive to migrate data before it fails further. We all learn the backup lesson the hard way.
