Hello all,

I have just completed a system design for my new desktop system and would appreciate some feedback related to component compatibility (I checked and double checked) and any gotcha’s (such as CPU fan not fitting, etc.). The last time I built a system IDE was all the rage.

The system is for high-end engineering computation and software multi-threaded development on both the CPU and GPU – this is why I picked a CPU with 12 hardware threads and a video card with 768 GPU cores. I can’t afford a NVidia Tesla.

The system:
Case: Corsair 650D
Power: Corsair HX850 (850 watt)
Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth X79 LGA
CPU: Intel i7-3930k
CPU Heat Sink: Corsair H80i
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866
Video: GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST 2GB
SSD: Boot Drive, Crucial M500 240GB
HDD: RAID 1, (2) Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s
Optical: ASUS SATA

Thanks,

Does that include monitor, OS and peripherals? If not you're looking at something like this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i7-3930K 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor ($569.99 @ Newegg)
CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X40 98.3 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($82.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock X79 Extreme6 ATX LGA2011 Motherboard ($199.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($259.99 @ Newegg)
Storage:...
Looks okay. I am no expert by any means with the GPU used for non gaming purposes, but could you step up to the GTX 760? Also you may want to consider getting a 500GB SSD so you could put the entire application and results all on the SSD. Much faster. With that large of a drive the Samsung 840 non pro 500GB would be fantastic.

I understand extra GPU RAM can come in handy. Have you considered the GTX 770? At $500 it comes with 4GB RAM.

Yeah I agree it's decent but could definitely be better. The 3930K is definitely a good choice but I would pair it with at least a Fire Pro V5800 for those fine ACAD redraws. I use a GTX 660 on my rig and it handles everything I need.

OP - what is your budget?

I would like to keep it in the low $2K range base price - I have been ballparking the $ using newegg - I think I am at about $2200 now without tax and shipping.

Wow, Great, thanks! I need to check out PCPartPicker.com - new to me. I already have keyb, mouse, dual 27" monitors and live near Redmond, WA, so good to go on Windows 7 Pro.

If you're going to use more than 16GB of RAM you need 7 Pro - with Home Premium you can only use a maximum of 16GB.
