Hello, I plan on either a Intel i7 4770K (product page here) or a AMD FX-6350 (product page here). The reason why I would want a AMD is because it's cheaper, and the reason I want the intel is because is better. So basically my question is I know that AMD is less powerful, but how much less powerful? Is it extremely less good, or just a litle bit less powerful?

Solution
Depends what you're doing with it. In gaming you're more limited by video card, and will need a rather fast video card to see a difference between the two. If something like video editing, the i7 will routinely match or beat the 8-core version of the AMD chip, meaning the 6 core version will take at least 50% longer to finish than the i7

to an i7 a 8350 would be a better comparison, and they are closer than you would expect in terms of performance teksyndicate ran some benchmarks that had virtually nothing in them and the 8350 is only 50 odd more than the 6300
intel may be 40% more expensive but 40% better? i dont think so, but stand to be corrected

semi-off topic: Actually, AMD's proccy hardware is not as weak as people say; they're crippled by intel's compiler that generates the slowest possible code with AMD CPUs (386, SSE) and the fastest possible code with intel CPUs (Highest supported by CPU). Source.

@OP Get the AMD CPU. Not only is the CPU cheaper, so is the motherboard. You can then use that saved money for a better graphics card and/or more RAM.

I have a FX-8350 fitted with a Sapphire HD 7970 Crossfire and 16gig DDR3 1600 and a i5 3570K fitted with a Gigabyte GTX 670 SLI and 16gig DDR3 1600 and atleast between these two rigs both of them handle gaming great. The difference in fps between these two rig when there is any is maybe 2-5 fps it is not enough to even really tell.

proper answer well reasoned and +1 from me

"meaning the 6 core version will take at least 50% longer to finish than the i7"
that looks like top gear maths to me?........

It is going to depend on what you want to do, how many cores you will use, and whether the software and games have any optimizations that favor one brand or the other.

If you're a gamer, check you tube for Actrons FX 6100 (* the OLDER SLOWER Bulldozer core) -vs- i7 3770k BF3 test. The performance gap isn't as large as some older games/benchmarks would have you believe.

I'd get an FX 6300 over the 6350. The 6300 has the same OC potential but is sometimes a few dollars cheaper.

Also, an FX 8350 will get you close to i7 3770k/4770k performance in most situations while still costing less than an i5 3570k/4770k.

All things considered, both options are very good. But the AMD board and CPU will be kinder to your wallet.

Which games? The more cores they use the better since that evens the playing field between CPU brands.

If it's older titles or games like Skyrim that only max 1-2 cores, you'll notice a difference. If it's a title able to use 5-6 or more cores, well...just see the example vid mentioned in my earlier post. ;)

editing video eats threads, amd 8350 will love it, in some games you will loose a few fps and in some you will gain, i dont think you would notice a performance increase with the inel part but you would notice the difference in price for both cpu and mo bo.

I'm trying to answer this for you, but you still haven't told me what games you plan to play. :/

As for video encoding, at least in H264 Intel is a bit faster on the first pass, AMD a bit faster on the 2nd pass. But the more cores you have the better so I'm going to recommend the FX 8350 for this again.

Well, can't argue against a 780. :)

My final recommendation would be this: Get a good quality AM3+ board with a 990FX chipset. That will allow you to get the most out of the FX 6300 and if you upgrade later it will support the 8350 better as well.

And get a good cooler to top that FX 6300. A Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is a great cooler for the 6300 on a budget.

Enjoy.
