Trying to get 360 controller to work with my PC

So I just got my Xbox 360 controller in the mail that I bought for playing Dark Souls on my PC, but it looks like it won't fit in any of the USB ports. Do I need some kind of adaptor or something to get it to work? It's significantly larger than the USB cables of my mouse, joystick etc.

Solution
Here's my XBOX controller buying history:

1) XBOX 360 wireless controller
(worked great but USB receiver died. Couldn't buy JUST the receiver. Found out it was COMMON they died. So I said, I'm going wired... )

2) Logitech F710
(Triggers were painfully stiff and Vibration didn't work right. REPLACEMENT no better for vibration). Forget that...

3) WIRED XBOX 360 Controller
*Working GREAT for two years! Now why didn't I do that first?

Future controller:
I will get a WIRELESS version of the new XBOX ONE controller:
a) WHEN the PC version is released, and
b) IF there's no compatibility issues (works same in all games as present controller, just a little better)

Other:
My XBOX 360 controller is great, but I've never been able to properly...

Here's a picture. If it's not clear, the xbox usb is about a milometer taller and wider than the one for my keyboard.

Here is a shot of the plug on the xbox controller:

There was also a plastic sheath around it the plug on the xbox controller that I removed, thinking it was packaging, but in retrospect, it probably wasn't :p. But even with that removed it's too big to fit into any of my usb ports.

I will ask the silly question first, have you tried putting the USB the other way? If so then good, could you possibly give me a link to the product as it doesn't look like the official Xbox cable and this could result in build quality issues if it is a second class brand. I would like to see the problem. In the picture is the top cable (header) plugged into your Xbox controller?

Yes I have tried ;). But it definitely will not fit, the plug is just a bit larger than any of my other usb plugs.

I'd like to try to figure out what it is and what I need to get before buying another brand and ending up with another plug to large to fit into my computer.

Wow ok I feel stupid now. I accidentally bought an Xbox (as in not Xbox 360) controller. Is that the problem then? That a controller for Xbox 1 (not One) needs an adapter to connect to a PC while an Xbox 360 controller does not?

You've pretty much got it. I would return the one you have got and get a wired Xbox 360 one, cause I am not sure of the compatibility of the Xbox 1 controller, whereas most games that have controller support work really well with the 360 controller. Make sure you buy a wired one cause the wireless one needs a special wireless emitted which costs as much as the controller.

Yes that will be the problem. I don't think the original Xbox controller is compatible or even works with a PC (what with it being outdated). Even if you did get an adapter which worked for the original Xbox controller you would have driver problems. If you have an Xbox 360 controller then you can use that to play games on your PC. If it is a wired controller then you can simply plug the cable into one of the front USB ports of your PC, if it is wireless then you can get a wireless adapter/transceiver which picks up the signal of the wireless controller. This is the wireless adapter I would recommend you to get (if you have a wireless Xbox 360 controller)

You can get a cheaper one but I borrowed one of my friend and he had a counterfeit one which did not work, even when I added it as a device and updated its drivers. With this adapter you are guaranteed quality.

My XBOX 360 controller is great, but I've never been able to properly do many moves in Street Fighter IV and Mortal Kombat Komplete. Not sure where the problem is, but it's physically impossible to press the buttons quick enough (or the games to register them). I will unretire my Logitech temporarily to see if that works.
