I have a SATA HD that I want to transfer to a new build but it's Pre-installed so do I l need to reformat prior to installing it on the new MB or make my connections first and on boot up of the new system do a reformat from retail OS MS 8? Will I run into problems or is that just the "process" because bios will ask which device I want to boot from such as DVD, it'll gain access to the disk and the next logical step would be reformatting the HD. Thanks for the help...kinda new to this.

Are you asking whether the old HDD's Windows 8 will work on a new pc? If so, chances are, it won't. You can still use the HDD though.

I guess it sounded confusing...so old HD thats preinstalled with Win 7. Upgrade to retail Win 8 on a new MB using the old HD.

As long as win7 is 64bit and win8 is also 64 bit then you can just upgrade.

To move win7 to the new system follow this guide. I've used it many times.

note: if on first booting Windows can't finish configuring, a reboot into safe mode, then a normal reboot will allow it to finish successfully.

ps - don't activate win 7.

The stick in your win8 and upgrade away. I've upgraded several pc's (and then downgraded several of them back to win7 LoL)

Dont forget to activate win8

I'll consider it it but I think I want to be able to install onto another PC too. I think the retail v. would give me more options though.
