im am a pc gamer but more by accident you see i scored a good deal on a quad core pc from 2008 ish second hand. now i have just upgraded from a gt 430 to an hd 6850 and the performance increase was massive. 30 fps at 720p on small maps is now 45-60 at 1080p and 35-45 on caspian/large maps. i am currently running on 4 ddr2 800mhz ram and am thinking of getting a new mobo that is capable of 8 gb ddr3. my cpu can fsb speed is 1066mhz. will the upgarde give me much improvement in games like bf3?
pc specs:
4gb ddr2
q6700 core 2 quad
hd6850
500w psu
32bit vista
with the new mobo i will also be able to oc i think. heres the link

so would it be worth it? how many fps extra would you guess i would get with the 8gb of ddr3 alone

ddr3 board for that cpu is a waste of time i had a ddr3 p45 chipset with my q9400, my suggestion for you would be to get another4 gb of ram assuming you have a 64bit os (if you dont dont by more ram!) outside of that overclock your cpu it can handle a much higher fsb than 1066. i would suggest firstly upgrade your heatsink and fan to something decent (not the stock one) and bump your fsb up to 333 / 1333(333*4) which ever your bios asks for and adjust the ram boot strap if your bios doesnt do it for, to keep your ram in check all this should be able to be done with out touching any voltages and then bump it up a little at a time from there. that cpu should hit 3.2 without even trying and with some persuasion 3.4~3.6 without a serious...

You have 32 bit operating system, you will barely be using 4 GB of ram as it is. The 8 GB of ram would help but I would not have specific numbers for you.

Edit: If you want to use more than 3.2 GB of ram, you will have to get a 64 bit operating system. If you do that I suggest you drop vista than and get windows 7 (or 8 if you want). Vista uses a lot of ram in itself and just upgrading the OS will see you performance increase.

Would agree with ^. Putting more money in that rig at this time I think would be a waist. LGA775 motherboards are slim pickings at this time anyway your best bet would be to save up for a new motherboard CPU ram and Windows 7 x64, Windows 8 x64 would be best.
