My WD Green 2Tb died on me 2 weeks ago after only 2.5 years of use.
So looking to get a replacement and I see this pop up. Typically I liked WD and Seagates, but I havent had much exposure to Toshibas.
But 2tb 7200rpm for $79 sounds like a good deal.
Also a friends selling me his Samsung 840 256mb non-pro for about $120 so I think these 2 should have me set for awhile.

Have you looked at them on Newegg? If you have, then you would have noticed their ratings usually settle around three stars. Egg. Whatever. I have had to work on two drives in machines (both Toshiba laptops) and one bare. Out of these one failed unusually early. I guess I would call them, "OK."

I have one that's a little slower than my Seagate Barracudas and quite a bit faster than my WD Greens (naturally). I use another external Toshiba Canvio Desktop that runs at 5900rpm that's been just fine for daily backups. If the price is right and you need a 2TB HDD, I don't see why you'd have any better or worse luck with the Toshiba than any other brand.

Incidentally, you'll see the Seagates run down to that same point every couple of weeks, too. They had the Toshibas down to 71.99 about a month ago. Almost jumped on a pair at that price.

This is apparently from the DT01ACA200

According to http://rml527.blogspot.ca/2010/12/hdd-platter-database-toshiba-35.html they are 1TB/platter designs. So performance definitely looks good.
"...These models, on the other hand, are new. However, when plugged in, at least the DT01ACA300 model identifies as a Hitachi HDS723030BLE640. Hitachi was probably preparing to launch them as the Deskstar 7K3000.B series, but Toshiba received Hitachi's manufacturing and knowledge assets seemingly at the last second."

as far as which brand is best, I guess that depends who you ask :)
ie: ford vs. chevy

Toshiba did not make HDD's, they typically contracted with Hitachi to make drives with their name on it and often the firmware would reflect the hitachi name.

WD bought Hitachi last year for 3.9 billion cash and ~1 billion in WD stock.
To meet regulatory requirements, WD divested assets to Toshiba so they could now make and market drives. I believe Toshiba is only allowed to make 3.5" drives.

In their notebooks, they use a 2.5'' Toshiba branded drive, or at least they did in a couple fairly recent machines I have worked on. That said, it could be made on contract by WD or be some type of legacy product from before the WD/Hitachi deal.
