display problem with ati radeon 4870hd

hi, i am facing this problem with my "xfx ati radeon 4870hd 1gb". when i ran my pc the GPU fan is running at its maximum speed and i could not see any display on the screen, when i restart my pc it was normal, after a while my screen turned into green followed by some other colours, then VPU recovery window popped out and the screen got blank again. the next time when i restart my pc my display was totally grained out with bits of different colours.then i switched off power and ran again, upto desktop screen the display is running fine after 10-15 the display is getting grained again followed by bank screen. can some one plz help me rectify this problem.

gigabyte g41mt-s2 main board
xfx ati radeon 4870hd 1gb
gigabyte e620psu
core2duo e7200 cpu
2gb ram

  1. Check to make sure that you GPU is seated properly. Also check that the cable connecting the GPU and monitor is securely fastened. Also chek to see if the 6 +2 pin connector is connected correctly in your GPU.

    How old is your GPU?

    Do you have a spare GPU you could use to test to see whether your GPU is on its last legs. From the description you have stated it seems that way I am afraid.

    my gpu is nearly 3years old, i have a very old "nvidia 7200gs" can i try it for testing ?? thankyou.
  6. i have found the solution for the problem which i have faced. it is problem with the fan which is not running at the speed it supposed to run, i just cleared and cleaned the dust which is clogged inside the shaft and greased it. thats it now its working as usual with out any problem.
  7. aha assuming you had not cleaned it for three years a lot of dust would have clogged there. Well done!
