My problem is i cant make sense of what "level" of graphics card I have , and then what would be an upgrade for that. I've been trying to figure it out on my own for days, but It is very confusing/difficult.

I'm trying to find a Graphics Card Upgrade from a AMD ATI 5500 Low profile That Fits My Dell Studio 540S. Its hard to know what is an upgrade and what is not.

Any suggestions would be helpful. I have about $100 to spend. I know this is an older computer but it runs everything fine except a few games.

Well you'll have to get in there with a ruler and tell us how much space can the case accommodate for the graphics card height-wise, length-wise and depth-wise (based on the motherboard).

This is the case he has:

Since the PC comes with a low profile GPU installed, I get the feeling that it's because it doesn't have the room to fit a standard height graphics card PCB in it.

Maybe, you are right. Then, there is a low profile version of this card.
