Hello, i recently just upgraded my card from a 6870 to a 7950 and i can't seem to get any higher gpu usage in games then 60-75%, playing farcry 3 my fps can go into the 80s but often dips into the low 30s and even once in a while dips into 28 fps range, the only thing that can get my gpu usage to 99% is 3d benchmarking software, i thought this was probably a cpu bottleneck but my cpu (Phenom ii 960t overclocked to 3.7GHZ) never seems to go above 85% usage and is usually in the 70s.
Ps im running catalyst 13.6 beta if that helps ,ive tried wiping drivers and installing multiple times but only with 13-4 (which doesn't work at all) and 13.6 .

Solution

I would try and find benchmarks using the same CPU and see what they are getting, look at their min/max and average. My guess is they are probably comparable. I use to have an AMD 965 BE and it held me back...
What are the rest of your systems specs? I would suspect that it is your CPU, even though it's not pegged at 100% there can be spikes which you may miss while monitoring it. Since your card does max out while using benchmarking software I doubt there is any thing wrong with the card itself.

8GB ram, Msi 970a-g46 mobo, 650w corsair psu, ive got the cpu and gpu info on my keyboards lcd so it's pretty easy to monitor the usage but again i've never seen it go above 85%, though you may be right maybe i am just missing it.

I use to have an AMD 965 BE and it held me back in games even though it wouldn't be pegged at 100% all the time, sometimes it would but it's usually the split second moments where the CPU needs to process a lot of data and then backs off where you notice it.

I upgraded to the i5 3570k and it really took a lot of stuttering out of my game play.

hmm thanks, as far as upgrading cpu, is there any good AMD processors out now that wont hold back this gpu? I'd like to keep away from buying a whole new mobo too...

It looks like your motherboard uses the FX architecture so you should be able to upgrade to either the 6350 or 8350. I keep hearing that the 6350 is better for gaming but I would look at some numbers before buying.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113327 this one is actually listed on MSIs website as working on your motherboard

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113284 I didn't see this one on the list but I don't see why it wouldn't work, it has the same power requirements as the 6350 and chip type. It might require a bios update to work, I'm not too sure.

Awsome thank you very much, by the way i just booted up metro 2033 and it actually took the gpu into the 90%s but most of the time it was in the 80%s usage wise, im assuming that this is just because metro is more of a gpu demanding game rather than cpu?

Yeah I bet with the new CPU your GPU will be maxed out in that game.
