When I got the laptop back they had replaced the intel i5 with a Samsung ST500alm012HN-M500MBB. Is this normal? In the Samsung a comparable hard drive?

Solution 13thmonkey Jul 23, 2013 an intel i5 is a processor not a hard drive. its probably a perfectly reasonable hard drive, so don't worry.
