Gents:

Running Ubuntu 12.04.x under Gnome & Nouveau:

Apache Open Office 4.0 is now available for U_12.04 --- I intend installing it in my "test" system. I imagine OfficeLibre the default install should be first removed. But, using Synaptic to extirpate OL I have the option of **removal** or **complete removal** ( including configuration files ... whatever THEY might be).

REMOVE or COMPLETE REMOVE ?? How deeply into the guts of Ubuntu does OfficeLibre sink its Frenchified claws? What do I gain vis' removal, one vs the other? Any issue of unexpected side-effects to other programs or functions?? [strike][/strike]

Solution
Complete removal just removes dependencies for Libre Office, plus the program itselt. If the dependencies are used by other programs, they will be left alone. Do a complete removal.

I appreciate your help. Librayoffice went away ... Apache OO_4.0 seems to have dropped right in. Expect some break-in period and the usual amt of bugs; I'm used to OO_3.2 look+feel. Hope Apache is a pleasant surprise.

What surely surprises is the minor media ripple this release produced. I see no celebration of noisy reviews. Open Office is the crown-jewel of usrland Linux , and Apache a major cup-bearer.

AOO 4 is simply an update to the "old" open office system that used to be the default in linux distros. I've used both over the years and even with the updates in AOO 4, I still think Libre Office is the better suite. That's one of the nice things about linux -- the price to try different programs fits my budget perfectly -- free.

mwp:

I'm hep. And most *nix users seem to favor LO over Apache. I still run U_10.04LTS, Gnome-2.x & Oracle OO_3.2 in my very able AMD965/9800gtx+ legacy system. Recent cartoonish changes in default UBUNTU do **NOT** meet with my approval. Tho running U_12.04.x in a new-built Xeon workstation, switching to APACHE OO and use of GNOME-classic reflect my rejection of the "squintsville" UBUNTU meme.
