XFX HD 7970 Core Broken?

I originally started this thread in the Systems forum because I wasnt sure whether the fault I have is with PSU or GPU. Anyway, my new build in Nov 2012: ASUS P8Z77-V LX, I7-3770K, 8GB Corsair RAM, Samsung DVD-RW, 212 EVO CPU Cooler, Zalman Z11 ATX Case.

I installed a Zalman ZM500-GS PSU. I've been able to overclock the CPU to 4.7, run all kinds of stress tests, etc and the rig has stood up well.

In April I also installed XFX HD 7970 Core edition and until recently the system has behaved itself.

In the last month or so I've been getting system crashes where the mobo detects power supply surges and anti-surge kicks in. I can replicate the crash with 3DMark11 Basic. GPU-Z shows GPU temps at 75C and high VDDC currents.

The advice I have got is that the PSU is probably not up to the job and may have degraded over time so that it can't now handle the power needs of the GPU so I have installed a new Corsair GS700.

Now, as soon as I put the GPU under load with any kind of stress test (eg 3DMark), the display goes blank although the PC doesnt seem to have crashed. I have to reboot to get the display back and sometimes I need to reboot a number of times before a get anything on screen.

Any thoughts?

TIA

I highly doubt the card is broken, but a 700w psu ain't exactly going to power that card plus a heavily overclock PC.

I am running a 750w psu and a asus 7950 OC, but stock cpu.

Try setting your pc back to default clock and see if you get the same issues with the card.

If you don't then you know your PSU needs to be bigger, or just stop overclocking, with that setup you shouldn't need to overclock anyway.

I have the same Mobo power surges. I have a ASUS M5A78L-M LX PLUS, with a Amd athlon 640 3.0ghz (stock clock). I just upgraded my Psu to a thermaltake tr2 600W. And Got a new gtx 650ti boost. My Psu only surges when I play certain games. (RaceRoom Experience, Arctic combat) those are the only games that do it

Sorry I should have made it clear, I have stopped OCing now. The crashes are all happening at stock speed. I would have thought a 700W PSU more than adequate for my set up?

Ok then by the sounds of it, it is potentially not your PSU.

I would try testing your 7970 in another computer to see if it causes the same problem, if so then the card is the culprit.

Thanks.
My other PC only has one 6-pin PCI-E power connector which isnt enough to power the HD 7970. I think I'll just RMA the XFX and see what they say.
