Nope, if you have an internet connection than you can game online. Dont need top pay for online services.

From Software simply did the most basic port possible. without the above mod, the mousecursor actually moves around on the screen if you play with mouse and keyboard. The resolution of the game is also locked at 1024x600 or so, the resolution you set doesn't actually control rendered resolution, so it looks pretty terrible. But, with the dsfix mod you can set your native resolution and solve the problem.
Also, having a controller plugged in is a big plus.
Apart from that, the game is excellent. Highly recommended.

Lag is probably the same. I haven't it noticed much, but then, I haven't played much online, so I'm not the best to discuss it.
There is no built-in cheat protection in the game. Windows Live may or may not have some, not sure.
Console forums are always full of "PC gamers cheat all the time it's impossible to play on PC because of cheats" threads and replies, everywhere. Yes, there are some people who cheat, but the vast majority don't. In my time playing DS, I have not encountered any invaders who were doing anything untoward. Has someone experienced a cheater? No doubt. I'd say the chances are low, but you never really know... I play a lot of online FPS, and there's always someone screaming about hackers, but it's generally just ragekids. I've seen one case of blatant hacking in the past few years, with some guy going 40-0 in BF3 in the first 2 minutes, and subsequently resulting in the server being empty as everyone left.
My advice, don't worry about hacks and cheats. If you do, you'll start seeing them everywhere there's a good player.
