I have a Dell Inspiron 17r se and I've decided to buy a 120gb SSD. I want to use the SSD for windows and programs. I want to keep my HDD and use it for data storage.

Info:
- my laptop does not include msata and I don't plan to buy one
- my laptop has 2 bays for SSD/HDD, a primary and a secondary (the secondary is currently empty)

Now this is what I want to do:

- Remove HDD
- Install SSD in the 1st bay
- Clean install windows and drivers with the 2 CDs I got when I bought the laptop
- Close the laptop
- Put the HDD in the 2nd bay
- Start the laptop
- Remove windows and driver files from HDD (I want to keep other files)

But I have some questions:

- Will this proces work?
- I absolutely do not want to lose my files in my HDD, so I'm asking if I handle it as explained above, will I be able to keep my files on the HDD?

Feel free to inform me about problems that could occur, because I'm quite a newby when it's about pc stuff.
Any additional information and help is really appreciated!

Yes, that is basically the process I used on my M6400. Download all the latest drivers for your model from Dell before starting so you have them handy.

I would backup any important files to another place before starting though -- and keep a current backup somewhere other than on that notebook if they really are important.

One thing though -- the OS install disk usually does not come with Dell laptops, but you can download a legal disk image of the identical version to what you have from DIGITAL RIVER and burn it to a DVD or put it on a USB stick with the MS USB STICK TOOL to do the install. Use your install key off the tag on the computer.

Yeah I figured it was like this, about the cd I payed extra for them to include the os cd and drivers cd. (these cds work only on my laptop model obviously)
