I was thinking about getting an amd fx-8320 gaming PC, but they only have motherboards with pcie 2. Will 3.0 actually be needed in the next few years?

Solution

You will likely run into a CPU bottleneck before you saturated PCIe 2.0 with a single card solution. In such a case, you will likely end up having to upgrade the system to a newer generation CPU and motherboard. As far as when PCIe 2.0 will start to hold you back, your guess is as good as mine :)

Will (Is) PCIe 3.0 be necessary or essential? No.

Is it desirable? Sure, but keep in mind that the performance difference between PCIe 3.0 GPUs in version 2.x and 3.0 slots is minimal. Overall system performance, effectiveness, and efficiency is more than just the PCIe slot standard in use. It is a function of the complete system.

Good question, but really of very small concern as of today (and for the next couple of years IMHO).

Have fun!

Right now, no, in the next 4 years, who knows, we might get gpus that can even saturate a PCI-E 3.0 slot. If you are buying a new build, definitely make sure it has 3.0.

Edit: this applies only if you plan on actually upgrading your gpu. If not, 2.0 will be perfect.
