Hi, my friend(has a gtx 680) keeps telling me that I am wrong for buying a gtx 770 and should have bought a gtx 680. He kerps saying that the 600 series is better. Please tell me the difference. I told him that the 770 outperforms the 680 in everything and he says that the benchmarks don't prove anything and the specs don't mean anything because nothing goes as it does on paper. He also saw some guy saying he had a problem overclocking his card and labeled the entire 700 series as bad overclockers. Please tell me the difference and help me convince him.

I said you can get a pre overclocked card and he said that it would overheat and would not listen to me when I said it has gpu boost 2.0 to help with that.

The GTX770 is more power efficient and generally a superior product.
When buying new, the GTX770 will be better.
But, the GTX680 is still a very good card and one would not upgrade it to a GTX770.
As to overclocking, the card makers are wise to this and bin their chips. The better ones are used in factory overclocked versions that can be sold for a price premium. With a stock card, you take your chances.

Heat is not a big issue with graphics cards like it once was. They do run hot, but are built to tolerate heat.
Your friend is correct to ignore specs and look at performance. A GTX680 and GTX770 will perform close enough to each other that it would need a synthetic benchmark to tell the difference.
