I bought the GeForce GTX 660Ti 2048MB used on amazon. The card had under 100 hours of use and was in great condition according to the seller.
However, I haven't gotten around to doing much testing and I want to make sure that it's working alright.

I ran furmark just to see how it would do and it reached about 75 C before I got nervous and turned it off. I'm actually just warming up to computer hardware, and I'm not sure if that is a dangerous temperature. I'm thinking about running the test again just to see how hot it gets. Is there any way for me to tell that the card is damaged or worn out by how hot it gets when I run furmark? It's about 40 C normally when I'm just browsing the internet. Where should I stop the test if it gets too hot? What's the hottest the graphics card can get without being damaged?

I would love it if someone could help me out and maybe enlighten me with a little more information about Graphics Cards and hardware.

Edit: It doesn't go above 79 C.

Manufacturer can tell you the max safe temps.

Experience can tell you that your equipment will last longer if you can lower the temps.

Furmark, Kombustor and other torture tests are worst case scenarios. They really blast your card. If it stays in the 70-80c range during those tests you're safe.

If you are still nervous and want lower temps, you could look at an aftermarket cooler. Just do your research before you buy. Some are good, others are junk, and some are not worth the cost.

Problem with safe temperatures are that if you ask 10 different people you'll get at least 5 different temperatures.

What sort of GTX 660 TI is it? The stock ones may get to that temperature but except in extraneous circumstances custom cooled cards (like MSI's Twin frozr or ASUS's DCUII) shouldn't be reaching that temperature. How is the ventilation in your case?

Anything below 90C would not damage the card. The ideal is to have it below 80C and the best is for it not to run over 70C. Your card is alright, though at web browsing 40C is a little hot. It could be the batch of card your seller received has a bad cooling card. It should be fine. Don't worry about temperature until it reach over 80C and around 50C when idle.

If you want the link to the page where I bought it, it has all the specs. http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-2048MB-Graphics-02G-P4-3660-KR/dp/B008S15X3W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374683995&sr=8-1&keywords=geforce+gtx+660ti
I'm just a little nervous that I bought a faulty card.

Play actual games and check the temps. Furmarks is MUCH harder on a card than games.

If you are under 85, I would call it safe.

40 when browsing the net is not going to hurt it either. Web browsers now use the video card and place a slight load on it as well.

The card will protect it self from both overpower and over temperature(first by cutting down the boost clock and if it still gets too hot it will clock down even further.).

If you look here, the low 70's are normal even with a good cooler.

It makes me feel a little better to know that furmark is pushing my card more than most games. Thanks for the info!

I see that this is an old question. But i add another solution just in case somone is looking for answer. What works for me is MSI Afterburner this smart program works for any card and creators of that program did a great job. So just run the fans on auto settings and your temperature will never raise above 70.

My AMD Radeon HD 6770 was running 56c just browsing. I blew out all the dust and replaced the thermal paste, following the article linked below, and now it runs at 35c. In retrospect I wish I'd just blown out the dust first and seen how much of a difference that made, before changing the thermal paste. I'm not sure it was necessary to take the risk of disassembling the card, but it all worked out really well.
