Want to change RAID setup

I have a poweredge server that came from Dell with 5 virtual disks setup in a raid 5 (8 physical.)
This system does not have an optical disk so I would prefer to not have to reload the OS but I wanted to remove 4 of the virtual disks and combine them into one virtual disk with either Raid 5 or 6.
If I delete the virtual disks 1-4 but leave the virtual disk 0 (where the OS resides) will I still need to re-load the OS?

hmm, unfortunately all the Dell website will tell me is "there is an array of RAID options" lol. and I'm unfamiliar with the system :(

anyways, it sounds like you have a hardware raid 5 combining 8 drives, which is then further split into 5 virtual drives (for the sake of organization or whatever). IF that is the case, then as long as you leave virtual volume 0 alone, you can do whatever you want with the remaining volumes (keep in mind the OS's ability to recognize larger drive sizes etc if you're combining them all) :)

That's a good question. I am not that familiar with raid setups. I see in PERC that I can delete the VD but they are all part of Disk Group 0. In every setup screen for the 5 virtual disks all 8 drives are listed.

can you give us the model of the server you have? I suspect there's a lot more than a simple RAID 5 array going on. it's also possible that the OS is backed up on a single drive somewhere...

It is a Dell Poweredge R510 Rack Server.
