I have the Gigabyte GA-Z87-D3HP motherboard. I just bought a set of $200 Sennheiser gaming headphones. Do I need to also purchase a discrete sound card, or should the onboard sound be good enough. I'm not really an audiophile, but I do want to have a good listening experience while playing games.

For gaming, you will definitely be set with the onboard sound. Even with such expensive headphones, if you're just gaming/listening to music, you really won't need a sound card. The only time you really need a sound card is if you're going to be sound editing etc.

Motherboard audio nowdays is all most people need. Only audiophiles or people creating a home cinema need a soundcard.
