This is my first PC build. I expect this rig to be able to play the following games at maximum settings, on my native resolution of 1440x900 at no less than 75 FPS.

  • Various source games (CSS,GMOD etc.)
    Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
Misc. low end free to play games, i.e. Soldier Front 2, Combat Arms etc.

I also want to be able to play Battlefield 3 on Medium settings at at least 60 FPS in my native resolution.

I would like to be able to run all of my needed background programs along with my games without lag. I run Dxtory, Steam, Skype and I usually stream music from YouTube when gaming.

AMD FX-6300 Vishera Processor - $119.99
MSI 970A-G46 Motherboard - $84.99
SAPPHIRE 100358L Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition 1GB Graphics Card - $104.99 ($89.99 after rebate)
AMD Radeon Entertainment Series 4GB RAM - $38.99
Western Digital WD Blue WD10EZEX 1TB HDD - $54.99
LG GH24NS95 DVD Burner - $18.49
NZXT Source 210 Black Case - $39.99
CORSAIR CX500 Power Supply - $59.99 ($39.99 after rebate)

Right now the subtotal is $532.42. Rebates from the power supply and graphics card bring it down to just below $500.

AMD Radeon because you plan on Litecoin mining. I'm going to assume you want to GPU mine. AMD's cards destroy NVIDIA cards at that because they have more stream processors.

No promises on BF3 at 60 FPS at Medium. Your budget is really very tight, but the fact that your resolution is only 1440x900 definitely helps at least a little bit. As a matter of fact, I seriously doubt that you're going to reach 60 FPS. Probably at least 30 if you don't care that much about not having AA.
